Gawurra at #TEDxSydney17 transcendent music

TEDxSydney is a TEDx event that probably has more music in it than most. The idea is that layering music and short films between talks helps with absorbing and nourishing the brain food from the speakers.

Every so often a musical performance comes along that is an absolute show stopper. The Gawurra performance this year was that piece.

Stanley Gawurra Gaykamangu is a Yolngu performer hailing from Milingimbi (Yurrwi), North East Arnhem Land with a deeply resonant voice and musical sensitivity to match. Gawurra was born in Gove and raised on his grandmother’s land of Yathalamara, moving to Milingimbi (Yurrwi) when he was 12.
Gawurra won the NT Song of the Year in the Pop category in 2016 for the demo version of his song ‘Ratja Yaliyali’, which was the lead single on his debut album of the same name, released on 8 April through CAAMA Music. A beautiful melody, and a well-known Yolngu Songline, Ratja Yaliyali [pronounced Rart-ja yarl-i yarl-i] translates to Vine of Love; a thread of love that keeps everything connected.

If you are quick you may be able to watch the songs off the livestream at 3:02:18 Exquisite and moving. Kudos to the backing muzos who are very Twin Peaks 🙂

Since I can’t embed that video for now – ( I will update when the clip is released) here is another version of one of the songs. I prefer the TEDxSydney17 version but if you miss that version – its the second of the two songs.
