The Birthday Swim

So there I was at 9:30am and the water is freezing cold. It had seemed like a good idea a few weeks earlier during the summer heat. And in I went because – after all it was my birthday and I had promised myself a swim/snorkel at Goat Island.

How often it seems that our daily lives are full of work and home expectations and demands. If we are lucky we do get holidays each year but it is easy to put off doing things we really should do much sooner.

I don’t think it makes sense to save things for a bucket list. Faster, better and more interesting is the way I roll so a long trip to a marine reserve for a swim with the fish makes perfect sense to me.

Here are some photos from that day and from an earlier visit when it was more “summery.”  Update: Below is the bright blue January swim days. The header image is grey and taken on Feb 11 – the actual day was a bit less summer.

I’ve been listening to a song called “Shadows and Light” from a 1974 album by Joni Mitchell.

“Every picture has its shadows
And it has some source of light
Blindness blindness and sight
The perils of benefactors
The blessings of parasites
Blindness blindness and sight
Threatened by all things
Devil of cruelty
Drawn to all things
Devil of delight
Mythical devil of the ever-present laws
Governing blindness blindness and sight

Suntans in reservation dining rooms
Pale miners in their lantern rays
Night night and day
Hostage smile on presidents
Freedom scribbled in the subway
It’s like night night and day
Threatened by all things
God of cruelty
Drawn to all things
God of delight
Mythical god of the everlasting laws
Governing day day and night”….more verses

It’s the kind of song that gets you thinking and when I am swimming I am thinking. Happy swim time everyone.
